Chaves Twirls No-Hitter Against Storm
|
The no-hitter is one of baseball's truly egalitarian achievements. It's done by the great and the not-so-great alike, and for nearly all of them it represents the pinnacle of a career. Visalia Rawhide pitcher Alex Chaves had his moment at Recreation Park, holding the Lake Elsinore Storm hitless and beating them, 3-0.
"Everything was working for him," Storm manager Ryan Durrence said. "He had a lot of late movement that seemed to cause the guys trouble, especially from the fifth inning on. He was in command."
Chaves rung up 9 strikeouts, issued 3 walks and faced only 29 hitters in his historic outing. After the game, he spoke to BNN reporters in the Visalia locker room.
"I really got nervous in the last inning," Chaves recalled. "I knew I had a chance at a no-hitter but it was hard to stay calm and concentrate. Thank goodness for my catcher. He told me he would do all the thinking and I could just concentrate on hitting his glove."
To date this season, Chaves sports a 6-4 mark with a 4.04 ERA in 13 starting assignments. He has held the opposition to a .273 batting average and has 69 strikeouts in 75.2 innings.
